Core Laboratory Home

The GCRC Core Lab offers GCRC Investigators access to reliable and validated assays of biological macromolecules.  The lab focuses on measurements not typically available in the hospital's clinical or reference laboratories.  GCRC Investigators are encouraged to contact the Core Lab staff to discuss specialized assay needs.

The Core Lab requires that all investigators submit a Core Lab Requisition form to apply for an allocation of resources within the lab.  Core Lab work cannot be initiated until the form is submitted and approved.

The Core Lab office and sample analysis areas (L1098 and L1100) are located on the first floor of the L-building near the main bank elevators.  In addition, the Core Lab maintains a sample processing facility within the GCRC clinic.  Because the processing room is close to patient exam rooms where a majority of samples are obtained, specimens can be processed rapidly, enhancing the communications between patient and GCRC providers.

The Core Lab is fully equipped with facilities for isolation of DNA and RNA and characterization of specific genetic variations and mRNA levels.  Lab personnel also perform radio-immunoassays and enzyme-linked immunoassays.  The Core Lab employs a computerized sample logging and retrieval system and maintains sizable sample storage capabilities.

The GCRC Core Lab is licensed by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and has held CLIA certification of compliance since November 1998.
